September This and That

On the second day of September my oldest granddaughter who is eight split her toe open at the swimming pool and neither we nor she has any idea how it happened. All we know is that there was blood, lots of blood (made worse by the fact that she was wet) and a few tears. Thank goodness for the first aid kit in the car!

I cleaned her up and put a plaster on and thought we’d have to go to casualty, but it stopped bleeding by the time we got home and although it was a long cut, it knitted together quickly thank goodness.

Next day my youngest grandson tripped and fell on his face as we were on our way to Clacton pier. He was more bothered about his hurt knees because he didn’t realise there was blood, lots of blood, coming out of his mouth. He’d grazed his upper lip too and his top lip was swelling up. He sat quietly on the pier with an ice lolly (ice and sugar – good for sore mouths) and the swelling went down so he was ready for action and the others took turns going on the little rides with him. He’s not quite tall enough for the bigger rides yet.

On Friday my youngest son and his family arrived for the weekend and on Saturday we had a tea party with all the family here. It was chilly, but we braved the garden and the kids kept warm by knocking hell out of a piƱata. I got one in the shape of a treasure chest because I don’t like the thought of bashing the animal shaped ones with a stick.

We caught Dusty on the table, wolfing down chocolate cupcakes. He’d walked past all the other stuff, so he knew what he wanted. Luckily everyone had finished eating by then!

Sunday was our Ruby wedding anniversary and we had another family party. This time the weather was lovely and I didn’t take any photos – I completely forgot!

It is frightening how fast the time flies by. It’s over ten years now since I started looking after my first grandchild during the day. This week they all went back to school and my littlest one has started now too.

The summer holidays went by so fast – too fast.

I miss having him around. I miss all of them, but I’ll still pick four of them up after school and see them in the mornings. And I have my lovely art wall they made (or should I say walls).

Love is very important. If someone is being horrible don't love.

So much to learn.

Art wall. Inspire. Draw. Touch.

Roxy

I potted up the Avocado I’ve grown from a stone and I have another which has sprouted a root. I am ridiculously pleased.

So why did we choose the month of September to get married? Does anyone want to guess?

Happy Writing!

  1. A lovely post, Teresa - I'm sure all your grandchildren have been very lucky to have you looking after them so much. Happy anniversary (our Ruby was in June). Funny how all the wedding photos of people getting married at that time all have a similarity about them - must be the fashions!

  2. You got married in early September so you could go back to school and finish your education. A child bride, like me. x

    1. No, I didn't go back to school, Lynne - I'd have had to be dragged in kicking and screaming, not that they'd have had me!
There was a different reason - a very unromantic one! xx

  4. Wonderful way to mark your anniversary, Teresa.

Children grow up so quickly now- or so it seems, but you have potential decorators in training looking at the drawings. :)

Does the September wedding have anything to do with sports- not sure what type, but there must be something...

You are such a beautiful bride and your dress is lovely. Your anniversary celebrations sound just perfect and I'm looking forward to finding out why you chose September. I think it might have a connection with sporting events too. xxx

No, it hasn't anything to do with sport. It's far more boring! xx

  7. gorgeous bride, gorgeous granny - the kids must have such a ball with you. september is a luvly month to get married but can't think of a particular reason for you choosing it - availabilty of church, to fit in with guests, getting a house? - we got our house quicker than we thought and terry moved in. i was still in my bedsit and we weren't getting married until september (we'd chosen that month you see!) so this seemed a bit daft so we brought the wedding forward to april!! caused a few raised eyebrows and suspicious glances teehee!! do tell. intrigued now xxxx

    1. Aw thank you, Sue. Ooh people were funny weren't they with their raised eyebrows and suspicious glances! We didn't get our first house until the following year, but had an attic flat. So no, nothing to do with accommodation. I wanted to get married on August 16th which was the closest Saturday to my mum and dad's anniversary, but ..... xx

  8. I really enjoyed reading your post and what a lovely granny you must be. They grow up so quickly don't they. It only seems like five minutes since our ruby wedding, so I'll whisper that this August we celebrated our 50th!! Can't guess why you chose September, but maybe as you couldn't have 16 August, you chose another special family date?

    1. Thank you, Maggie. Belated congratulations on your 50th - I know what you mean, it doesn't seem long since our 25th. I wish there were some way to put the brakes on and stop time flying by so fast!
The date wasn't a special one xx

September for the wedding? Was it something to do with tax benefits?

    1. Thank you, Pat. Dusty says he would have saved some cake for Tim 'n' Ted if he hadn't been caught!

Yes, Pat, that's the very unromantic reason for the September wedding - something to do with the tax allowances (I've never let him forget that) xx

  10. Loved this post Teresa. I can emphasise with looking after grandchildren though my eldest is not yet five. The elder two started school this week - one took to it like a duck to water, the other is a little less enamoured at the moment - he is the younger one. Gorgeous wedding photo - mine was in 1979 and yes, a similar look. September? Let's see...was there a special deal on or did you want to get married before a birthday? I married two days after my 23rd - didn't think that one out properly as Dave was still 22. Do tell, I am now intrigued... :-)

    1. Thanks, Debbie. I hope your little grandson settles down soon. It's such a big step for them isn't it (and quite a big one for us too!). They seem to start school so very young these days.

Pat has correctly guessed the reason for the September wedding :-) xx

  13. Well naturally Dusty would want the chocolate cupcakes! Bless him. I hope he enjoyed every forbidden one. Forbidden things are always better, aren't they.

I see Pat has the reason for your September wedding. I was going to suggest perhaps the honeymoon would be cheaper!

  16. What a lovely family you have Teresa. I agree that family and love is the most important thing in life and every moment should be treasured - grazes and all. Many congratulations on your Ruby wedding anniversary.

I love the colourful paintings your grandchildren have made for you. Creativity is definitely rife in your family. You must be so proud.

    Have a lovely week.
