Free Paperback Book!

I may have mentioned once or twice that I have a story in the anthology Writers for Animals which you can buy in paperback or for Kindle.

Proceeds will go to three animal charities chosen by the editor, Jenny Elliott-Bennett.

Hillfields Animal Sanctuary. There are lots of ways you can help Hillfields – donating money is one, but you can also sponsor an animal at the sanctuary for £5 for six months or £10 for a year (a great Christmas gift for an animal lover!). Of course they need other things too, such as building materials and sheds. Read more about them here.

Forget-Me-Not Animal Rescue is there for all animals, farmed, domestic and wild. Donating is easy via PayPal or you could sponsor Kelly Ryan when she jumps out of a plane to raise funds! Visit them here.

ARAN – Animal Rights Action Network is a peaceful organisation committed to fight animal abuse across Ireland. Check out their campaigns here. They are campaigning against all animal abuse, from fur farming to the use of wild animals in circuses. They are also trying to educate people not to buy pets as Christmas presents.

It is widely believed that this year will be worse than usual for the amount of animals dumped around Christmas. Battersea is already seeing the start of a “cat crisis” with 50% more people this year giving up their cats.

I promise, if you follow any of the links I’ve put here, you won’t see any distressing pictures.

Now to win a copy of Writers for Animals – which contains some great stories both fiction and real life – all I ask is that you read this post and leave a comment by next Sunday 16th December – even if it’s just to say hello! I’ll put all the names in a hat and get Indy to pick out a winner and I'll try to get it sent off in time for Christmas.

I should say that the book is intended for adults, not children.

It would be great if you’d follow one or more of the links, but I’m not going to insist on it. I just want to give one of these lovely books away.

Indy says “Go on, you know you wanna!”

  1. I think maybe it should be harder for people to own animals. If they had to fill in a form answering a few questions to prove they understood their pet's basic needs and then wait a week or two for a license maybe less irresponsible people would but a cute puppy or kitten on impulse.

  2. That's a very good point, Patsy. I shall download the book when I get my kindle for Christmas and will look at the links later. Thanks Teresa.

  10. Patsy's right people should have to get a licence to own a pet, anyone who really loved and wanted an animal wouldn't mind the extra paper work. Well done on your blog of the year thingy! :-)

  11. Hi Teresa and hi Indy,

Ah yes, humans need to realise that looking after a beloved animal is a life long commitment. More than just novelty pets, but treasured, much loved, family members. I'm going to post up this important blog via the various social networks.

In peace and thank you for your support, Teresa.

  12. I'd love to read this, Teresa.

It's unbearable to think of animals suffering and I agree with Patsy's idea that people should have to prove their suitability before taking on the commitment of loving and caring for a pet.

Thank you so much for drawing our attention to these amazing charities. x

  13. It seems to be pretty much unanimous that there should more difficult to obtain a pet, and I definitely go along with that. They are companions to be valued, not a consumer commodity. Would people get away with dumping their chidren in hard times? Thank goodness for these charities and others like them.
And doesn't Indy look all authoritative?

    1. If only everyone took the same steps to check out homes that the animal rescues do! I saw an advert for a free Jack Russell being rehomed because "he doesn't get on with the new puppy" - makes you sick doesn't it! You're absolutely right, some people treat them like commodities.

Indy's actually saying "Okay, I'm sitting, so where's my treat?" but don't tell him I told you that x

  14. That *it* should be more difficult, even. *Hangs head in shame* . I'd blame the cat for jumping on the laptop, but she's innocently stretched out as close as she can get to the radiator.

    1. Sue - I found you hiding in my spam folder! Indy is very excited about choosing the winner. He's chosen his outfit for the picking-the-name-out-of-the-hat ceremony and he's promised me he won't eat any, but he had his paws crossed when he said it :-) x

  16. Indy is looking very bright now.
When we got our first dog there were still dog licences- I remember going to the local post office to buy it. Sadly a couple of years later they abolished them.
Too many animals are bought because it's the latest must-have pet, like micro pigs were few years ago.

    1. I remember the old licences. I've still got one somewhere that I had for my dog, Cassie. Yes, a lot of those micro pigs ended up in rescues didn't they. You see a lot of small animals, rabbits, hamsters and so on in rescues now too. At least it's something that their owners hand them over x
