Scouting for pups!

I haven’t posted recently because there was nothing to post about except Christmas and snow and I think we all had enough of that thank you very much! Although we seem to have a covering out there again just now.

But something exciting and life changing happened just over a week ago. I went with my daughter to pick up her new puppy and this past week has been all about settling her in. It was four years almost to the day since we brought Dusty home.

She already knows that I pick her and Poppy up in the mornings to bring her back here and happily goes home again later in the day.

She’s called Scout and is a mix of four different breeds. I shan’t tell you what they are, but see if you can guess. If you want to that is.

Her colours are black, honey, white and reddish brown. She’s about twice the size Dusty was when we got him.

Here she is.

Scout

Tinks, who is the most laid back cat I have ever met, went straight up to her and kissed her on the nose. No puffed up tail or arched back or huge black eyes.

Harley. Well Harley did this the first time she saw her, but she now accepts her. They even rubbed noses yesterday!

Dusty has been better with her than I dared hope. His record with other dogs is odd to say the least. Some he’ll be friends with and yet others he’ll bark at for no apparent reason. He's starting to catch on that the new addition wants to play and he's playful himself, so I see fun and games ahead.

In the photo below, Scout had rolled the treat ball towards Dusty and he was trying to decide whether to check it for more treats or roll it back. When he first met her and for the first few days, he's been so calm, like a different dog. I don't expect that to last.

Poppy, Dusty and Scout

When she goes outside and has a wee or poo, she immediately comes to you for a treat – and she’ll sit for that. If she goes indoors, she uses a puppy pad – unless she misjudges, but there have been few accidents. We were a bit concerned because she sleeps so much, but then realised we are so used to high energy dogs (mentioning no names Dusty-never-stops) that she’s just a normal pup.

She comes alive when the kids get home from school. She adored them all from the very start. And I fell in love with her the minute I saw her. It’s amazing just how fast they worm their way into your heart isn’t it.

Her two younger little people knew nothing about her and came home from school and there she was. They were over the moon!

Meeting one of her little people for the first time

Hope everyone is okay, keeping warm and looking forward to Lovely Spring!

  1. What a really lovely post, Teresa, and it's great to hear from you again! She is one cute little puppy. Although I grew up with a Collie/Labrador mix who I adored, we've never had a dog ourselves as son was allergic and husband not so keen. So I enjoy all your posts about your animal family.

  2. What a lovely heart-warming post Teresa, just the thing as I look out over, yet again, a covering of snow :-(

Scout is gorgeous. Is there a bit of labrador in there, basset hound, not sure? Perhaps she will calm down Dusty-never-stops (teehee), you never know.

Oh yes roll on Lovely Spring. Won't we appreciate it this year. I had to go on an enforced detour yesterday as my usual road was unexpectedly closed. I wasn't in a rush, hadn't a clue where I was going but knew I'd get there eventually and the trees, carpets of snowdrops, and daffodils were wondrous to behold. Made me think maybe spring wasn't too far away despite everything!

Thank you for a lovely post, keep warm and enjoy your weekend :-) xx

    1. I remember last time I was up your way, Sue, there were daffodils everywhere. I can well imagine how lovely your detour was. My daffs have been flattened by this latest lot of snow.

No Labrador or Bassett Hound. No gundogs or hounds included in her mix :-) It would be nice if she calms him down, but I've a feeling it will go the other way :-) Have a lovely weekend :-) xx

  3. I know nothing about dogs or breeds but the new puppy looks very cute.

Btw, we are having snow again here now. I thought it was Spring time!

    1. To be honest if I didn't know what she was, I would only have guessed one of the breeds (and that was after seeing her dad)!

Even the kids are getting fed up with snow now - unheard of! You're right, it is supposed to be spring - I wish someone would tell the weather :-) xx

  4. Beautiful puppy, Teresa! I am feeling 'broody' now. They are hard work but it's such fun having a puppy in the house, isn't it? Has she got a little bit of Jack Russell in her?

    1. She's got me feeling broody too. I miss her so much when she goes home. No Jack Russell, but I see where you're coming from, she is a bit JR-ey xx

  6. OK, I'm having another go... Alsatian?

  7. Aaaw, so cute! I'm glad she gets on with everyone else.

I did guess she had some Alsatian in her and se I'm right.

I'm also guessing one of her grandparents was a wrinkly dog that I've realised I have no idea how to spell ... Mr Google tells me it's Sharpei. I'd add dachshund to the mix except you said she's big, so I'm going for labrador.

    1. I love Sharpeis, but no. You're along the right lines with a bit of a wrinkly breed. She has the eyes of that grandparent which is the biggest (heaviest anyway) of the four breeds and is French. The other two breeds are British :-) xx

  8. I nearly said Bulldog or Boxer with the 'wrinkly' bits?

  9. French mastiff? (Gosh, with that and Alsatian, she's going to be big!!)

    1. That's the one. Without seeing the parents, I don't think it would be possible to guess at the other two breeds, so I'll tell you, Collie and Staffy. She's a real mix! :-) xx

  13. ooh! Gorgeous pup! Had I not read all the above, I would have said Collie Bassett and Great Dane - now that would be big! Have had to guess at cross breeds a few times of late - it is always hard especially if one of the parents happens to be a cross breed too. she looks beautiful whatever she is! Good to see you back and the snow has gone today - I woke to see the garden smothered again on Sunday and like you, was not impressed. Spring is coming! :-) XX

    1. My mum used to call our crossbreeds "Bitzers". Scout has a collie grandparent - I think it was clever of you to see it :-) Dusty seems more besotted with her every day.

I've been hiding away a bit since Christmas, not sure why, just my version of hibernating! The last lot of snow was a disappointment wasn't it, but I think Spring is fighting back! xx
