Mystery Flower

I’m sure I’ve blogged about this before years ago, but does anyone know what this flower is?

It’s raining and blowing a hooley so was a bit tricky to photograph.

It grows in abundance along the dykes and today we saw some growing at the side of the road. When it goes to seed, it’s like a giant dandelion clock. It’s very pretty. I tried gathering the seeds and scattering them in my mum’s garden – which must have been almost twenty years ago - but without success, yet they seem to plant themselves anywhere.

UPDATE - After all these years... I think it may be Salsify

  1. Sorry Teresa, my British Countryside book of wild flowers is no use at all. Some of the prettiest flowers are growing by the wayside at the moment. Patsy might know?

  2. Hi Teresa,

I just went on an image search to see if I could find that flower. Unfortunately, I couldn't see to find it.

Google images were totally usually. Good luck.

    Gary :) x

    1. What a good idea - I didn't think of trying an image search. I think the images are to blame - I have better photos taken years ago but it would take me forever to find them. Thanks for trying, Gary :-) xx

  3. It looks like a softer version of a thistle, is there such a thing as a sea thistle??? It's beautiful whatever it is:))

    1. I think there might be - or sea holly? I've been doing some googling and I think it might be Salsify - not sure though :-) xx

  4. YAY, you found out what it is! I think you can sometimes use Google Image search to find a matching picture, but I can't remember how to do it!

  5. I get a yellow flowered version of that in the back-garden, and thought it was a weed. :)

Your colour, in the picture, is much prettier, Teresa.

    1. I found the yellow version first when I was googling which led me to the pinky purple one. I always thought they were some sort of exotic weed. I find it amazing that it is supposed to be difficult to get to germinate yet it's planted itself on the dykes and now in the weedy verge! Mind you, I couldn't get the seeds to grow - I think I may have to try again. I would love some in the garden :-) xx
