The Jungle Book

When I heard they were making a new version of The Jungle Book, I thought, “Why?” I remember going to see the first one at the cinema when I was about ten or eleven and it was quite different from other Disney films I’d seen.

But, you know, half term, lousy weather, got to do something so off we went – minus one as one of my little people was last minute poorly.

I’d skimmed through a trailer for the film, muttered about why mess with something that was perfectly all right.

You can see the trailer here

Within minutes of the film starting, I’d changed my mind. I laughed. I cried. Actually I cried quite a lot. It was stunning and Neel Sethi who played Mowgli – well he was just gorgeous and my goodness, so believable!

When we left the cinema, Mr Teresa and I discussed who would bring the poorly one to the cinema the next day to see it. “I don’t mind seeing it again,” I said with a smidgeon of self-sacrifice. “No, no,” he said. “I’ll bring her to see it.” The oldest of the little people, who is almost as tall as me now said he’d come too – to keep his sister company of course.

We continued the discussion all the way home. “I’ll do it.” “No, let me!” “I insist.” But in the end it was pointless as we had gone on the last day as I found out when I went online to book tickets for the following day.

Ah well - hoping now it is on Movies for Juniors at the cinema in the summer holidays and if not, well I’ll probably (definitely) be getting the DVD anyway.

The sun has turned my own little black panther rusty!

  1. Aw - gulp - found myself welling up just at the trailer. It looks absolutely stunning. I think I might have missed it at our local cinema - dammit - so I shall probably - definitely ;-) - be getting the DVD! Your own little black panther looks beautiful. Hope your poorly little one is now fully recovered. She still has a treat in store doesn't she, but what a shame she missed it bless her. xxxxx

    1. She is fine now, thank you, Sue. And she had a special day with her lovely Nan and Grandad :-)
The animals in the film were wonderful and the mother wolf Raksha (Lupita Nyong'o)... oh she took my heart :-) I so want to see it again xx

  2. Oh gosh your mention of Mowgli. Sends me back years, for remember getting that story in book form Rudyard Kiplings 'Jungle Book' when I was about ten or eleven ears old and of reading it several times. A wonderful story that wrapped it's self into my imagination - films just don't do it for me.

  3. That was funny Teresa. The original version was on TV this afternoon and we caught the end of it. Why do Disney films always make me cry? I shall wait for the new version to come to TV so I can cry in private!

    1. They certainly have a knack when it comes to making you cry don't they. I still remember being at the cinema as a child and crying (Disney of course - the Legend of Lobo) and my mum's friend asking what on earth was wrong with me and I ended up embarrassed as well as upset! My mum later explained that not everyone loved animals like we did xx

  4. Hi Teresa, I too recall going to see Jungle Book with my mum and brother. It was fantastic, and I loved the songs. Do they sing in the new film?

I'm looking forward to going 'flicks' this week to see Me Before You, I read the book last week, and I'm sceptical as to if the film will do the book justice.

Have a good week Teresa and thank you for sharing a snippet of your life with us.

    1. There are just two of the songs in the new film, Maria and they've changed them a bit.
I hope you enjoy Me Before You :-) xx

  5. I think we can't resist Disney films, Teresa, because they bring out the memories of our childhood. :-)

  6. It sounds far more wonderful than I would have imagined. The first one wasn't one of our favourites, so we didn't go to see this, but now I wish we had! Now I've read your post, we've decided to catch up with it as soon as we can.

How lovely that you were all volunteering to be the one who saw it again! I hope your little poorly person is all better now. xxx

    1. It is so very different from the cartoon, Joanna - and dare I say it, so much better. The little poorly person is fine now, thank you. But we have a very good excuse to go and see the film again if it's shown in the summer holidays :-) xx

  7. I think I read the book as a kid--it was the Disney version of the book, not the original. I saw yesterday they're remaking The Blues Brothers.

  8. Hi Teresa,

A glowing endorsement for the remake. Stay tuned for the remake of "Pollyanna"! Not to be confused with made for TV remake of said film from 1960.

Cats and people, enjoying the British sunshine!

    Gary :) xx

  9. Hi Teresa

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I keep meaning to go but never seem to get round to it. Its my eldest's favourite film - he was glued to the animated version when it was on TV at the weekend. We bought him the video of Jungle Book 2 (shows how long ago that was) when my youngest was born and he wore the tape out. Will definitely get this out on dvd but still showing once a day round here so might get a chance to see it on the big screen.

    1. It's funny how kids really take to a particular film and keep watching it isn't it, Linda. Hope you get to see the new one :-) xx

  10. I didn't know there was a new one, Teresa ( must have been sleeping through the publicity for that!). Loved the original but would like to see this one now - wonder if wee granddaughter has seen it yet...

    1. I didn't see any publicity either, Rosemary. I remember hearing they were making another Jungle Book, but didn't realise it was on at the cinema until I checked the listings. I think your little granddaughter might be a bit young - our 5 year old got a bit scared at one point. Enjoyed most by the 11 year old (and we grown ups) I think :-) xx
