Books and Bad Legs

If you’re a Catherine Cookson fan, you may like to know that many of her books are now available on Kindle. I am re-reading Hamilton at the moment which I read for the first time in the 1980s.  I have never forgotten first getting the trilogy (Hamilton, Goodbye Hamilton and Harold) from the library and enjoying them. Hamilton is an imaginary horse. I had an imaginary horse as a child.

I am also reading SpyPrincess: The Life of Noor Inayat Khan by Shrabani Basu.

I don’t know how long Milly Johnson’s short story, Here Come the Boys is free on Kindle, but it is at the time of writing and it comes with a sneak peek of her new novel.

Also free is Danger at Mellin Cove by Rena George and you can read more about her new book, Mistress of Mellin Cove here.

I must admit I’ve become a Kindle convert after I’d insisted I’d miss reading “proper” books too much to give them up. I knew it had happened when I went through my Amazon wish list and changed all my paperbacks to kindle editions.

Following his terrifying plummet from my bed and his subsequent limp diagnosed as a soft tissue injury, Dusty gave me a fright last Sunday when he started whimpering and crying in the garden. I rushed out and found him holding up his paw (much like he is in the photo only without the happy smile). When he tried to put it down, he had it folded over so he was on his knuckle. Panic! He soon recovered and carried on limping round as normal, but I decided to take him back to the vet for another check-up.

Then on Monday he was hardly limping at all and I took him for a short walk to see how we got on and on Tuesday the limp had gone. Just like that. Like magic. I was careful at first, not letting him run about too much, but he’s completely back to normal, flying round like a mad thing.

He knows he’s not allowed on my bed unless I say so – not that he takes any notice. But if Harley’s sleeping there, I won’t let him disturb her.

The other day he wriggled up and woke her up which was fine when he was just snuggling up, but then he got too pushy.

So she gave him a smack.

And she knows exactly where I hide the Dreamies.

  1. Thanks for the book recommendations Teresa. I have Rena's Melin cove one, and look forward to the next one. Also got the boys one about the cruise ship. I've just started reading it. Oh, Dusty is a bit of a worry isn't he? I'd be afraid to let him out of my sight. And Harley is putting him well and truly in his place. I love the bench photo. I have some of your stories to catch up on. I'm a bit behind with my People's Friend reading, as I've been busy writing. Talk soon, great post. xx

  2. I can always read a Catherine Cookson when stuck for a book. Still haven't really taken to reading on my Kindle, though. I can tolerate a short story, but anything longer than a few pages loses its pleasure very quickly.

Love Harley and the Dreamies. (Which sounds like a band!)

    1. The only books I don't like reading on Kindle are the ones where I want to flick back through the pages - I find that part of it annoying, Joanne x

  3. I've never been a big fan of C Cookson but my mother adored her books. I think lots of people feel the same about the kindle until they try it, Teresa! I still like to have a print book on the go downstairs but love the lightness of the kindle to read in bed.

Glad Dusty is okay! By the way - I've left you a message on my blog...

    1. That's exactly what I like about the Kindle, Rosemary!
      Thank you - I've seen your message - I'm still smiling :-) x

  4. Glad to hear Dusty is okay. Zac has a habit of knocking his feet when he's running around like a mad thing and ends up with lumps, limps etc. The first couple of times we were straight to the vet with him but now we usually give him a day or two to see if he can sort it out himself.

    1. Yes, it's usually best to leave it a day or two like you do with Zac x

  5. Awwww poor Dusty!! Sounds like it was some kind of sprain! Awww, but glad he's doing well and annoying feisty Harley! LOL!

I'm yet to be convinced by Kindle! :-) Take care

  8. I love these pictures, Teresa - especially the Dreamies one! And I'm so glad Dusty's limp is better. In fact they both look the picture of health and happiness.

Thank you for the recommendations too. I can't seem to get on with Kindle at all, but my husband loves his, especially as it saves him having to hold heavier books when he's reading in bed. xxx

    1. I was so set against having a Kindle, Joanna, but I got my husband one and I kept asking him to download books for me and ended up using it more than him, so he got me one of my own.
It's so easy to have more than one book on the go too - so you don't end up with a huge wobbly pile next to the bed :-) x

  9. Lovely, lucky animals!

Interesting, isn't it, how we all start off swearing we'll never touch a Kindle, because we all love 'real' books. And then we come round, very gradually, to the digitial, and then we're hooked (but we still buy the paper kind, of course).

    1. I only buy a paperback now if it's cheaper than the Kindle option. Must say I still love the look, feel and smell of a real book and I could still spend all day in a book shop, but for comfort and convenience it has to be the Kindle x

  11. Hi Teresa,

Good to know that Dusty seems to have made a recovery. Our furry friends can sure be a worry. Sometimes, I think they're pretending :) Kindle? All this technology confuses by human brain. Must get Penny to explain it to me....

    1. When I told the vet about the limping and whimpering he said, "He's probably just being a puppy!" Then again, they can hide very well when they're in pain. He is a bit of a tart though - he flings himself at the feet of complete strangers and whimpers so they feel sorry for him and tickle his tum! x

  12. Dusty has done better than me, getting back on his feet again. Soft tissue injuries - not nice! Glad to hear he is much improved.
Regards the Kindle, they are great aren't they? I am even contemplating biting the bullet and giving away all of my 'to be read' pile of paperbacks. Our home is overflowing with books, and I am desperate to de-clutter, and just keep the signed copies from friends. But can I do it? I really want to, I mean I can buy them all again on Kindle, can't I? And I am raising monies for a good cause at the same time.

Ugh! I do find it very hard to part with books, and magazines too! Any tips or advice appreciated. Have a good week Teresa. :-)

    1. I looked up soft tissue injuries, Maria and they can be more serious than broken bones.
Must admit, I've been ignoring my paperbacks and getting ebooks - but I'm the wrong person to ask about getting rid of books :-) Good luck x

  14. Poor Dusty. When Flossie was a very young pup she fell out of the back door and lay there, stunned. I was sure I had killed her! She had to be carried inside and held on my lap but after a short while, she was running round again - I must assume she had winded herself. As for parting with books - I am unable to part with any but my kindle is one of my favourite things these days but then there are the 50 hard back books I won of course) :-)

    1. Oh poor you, thinking you'd killed her! Why do we automatically blame ourselves for these things? Dusty's hurt himself again - I've no idea how - I just know he ran off fine and came back limping so now he's grounded again.
I didn't realise those books were hardbacks! Blimey, that's even better x
