Well it is mostly quiet now,
but it wasn’t very quiet when 7 year old granddaughter put her school shoes on
and a huge spider leapt out of one and scurried across her foot.
I didn’t know she could
scream like that. Apparently I screamed too, but I don’t remember it. All I
remember is watching this huge thing bulldozing across the floor at speed
before it shoved a couple of dining chairs out of its way and disappeared into the shadows.
I think it even looked over
one of its shoulders and let out an evil laugh.
Dusty the Fearless heard the
screams and ran into the garden barking at Moggy the Merciless before realising
Harley was snoozing in the trampoline and Moggy the Merciless was nowhere to be
seen.
He came back in all
triumphant anyway and we had to tell him he was a good boy to rush to the
rescue, even if no one out there needed rescuing.
Considering the spider had
been in her shoe and had run over her foot, my granddaughter took it very well. I would have been a hysterical mess for hours if it had happened to me.
“I don’t want to
talk about it ever again,” she said.
And she proceeded to talk
about it all the way to school.
She says she’s not an
arachnophobe, because she doesn’t mind small spiders, but that she is
arachnophobish.
Sorry for smiling here at the image of it all, Teresa. I had one in the sink last night but trapped it in a plastic cup and deposited it outside. Your granddaughter will probably love relaying the story to her friends!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure she will, Rosemary. I've been putting the spider catcher that Bernadette recommended to good use, but this one was too fast and the spider catcher was upstairs!
DeleteHa, ha' ha' what on earth is it about ladies and spiders ?
ReplyDeleteThis is a genuine question Teresa for I truly do not understand.
I wish I knew the answer to that! I do know some very brave ladies though, so it isn't all of us!
Delete"arachnophobish". Brilliant. I'll remember that one.
ReplyDeleteGreat word isn't it :-)
DeleteOMG I'd have expired on the spot. LOVE your fantastic writing - I could positively see that spider shoving the chairs out of the way and giving an evil laugh. I 'rescued' a spider the other evening but it was tucked down the side of the carpet and when I put the b****y glass on it it ran didn't it. I think my screams probably were louder than your grandaughter's! I did catch it though and put it outside - does that make me arachnophobish!! What's the spider catcher Bernadette recommended? :-) xx
ReplyDeleteYou are definitely arachnophobish, Sue as you were able to catch the spider with a glass. The spider catcher is a Katcha Bug and this is the link for it https://www.amazon.co.uk/Primrose-Katcha-Bug-Spider-Catcher/dp/B00EYBB08W/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1474484108&sr=8-13&keywords=spider+catcher
DeleteIt's very nifty and easy to use - I've only caught medium-ish ones so far. I'm not sure even with that if I could get close enough to one of the huge ones to then close the little door (shudder) :-) xx
You really made me smile as I could picture the hysteria! Watch out for 'return of the spider'. Sounds like he enjoyed the getaway!
ReplyDeleteI'm telling myself it's the same one I see all over the house and there aren't really lots of them. Shoes are thoroughly checked now though :-)
DeleteMade me smile. That spider sounds so big and strong. I bet he trains for Mr. Universe in his spare time (the time he isn't shifting your furniture around and/or lying in wait for you). *Chuckle*
ReplyDeleteHe was pretty hench, Jackie so I wouldn't be surprised :-)
DeleteDelighted that the Catcher is being put to good use, even if only in the mid-range. We haven't really got to the Autumn spider fest yet as it's only just stopped being hot. We are having a lot of dopey wasps though!
ReplyDeleteThank you for pointing me in that direction - it's been invaluable! I almost want the opportunity to see if I can catch a big one with it - almost!
DeleteI'd be hysterical if that happened to me, Teresa. \O/
ReplyDeleteI have one of those battery operated bug suckers and it's quite satisfying being able to get rid of creepy crawlies without having to get too close.
Me too, Carol. The screaming aside - which I think was perfectly understandable, she was very calm considering. My son's got one of those battery operated bug suckers, but there have been a couple of big ones it just hasn't been powerful enough for which is scary!
DeleteA story, Teresa?
ReplyDeleteI would think people are fed up with my spider stories by now, Wendy ;-)
DeleteThere have been a lot of posts about spiders lately. It must be the season for them. I think they're smashing little fellows. We've had one on the back window for a few weeks and I've banned the wife from disturbing him.
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely spider season. I hope your spider appreciates being left undisturbed :-)
DeleteHad a similar experience with a cockroach once - give me a spider any day!
ReplyDeleteUgh, cockroaches. Given a choice, I think I'd rather have the spiders too!
DeleteI love 'arachnophobish' and also 'that the spider was 'bulldozing'! xxx
ReplyDeleteArachnophobish is a great word isn't it :-) xx
DeleteWhew, glad I don't mind spiders! Sounds quite upsetting!
ReplyDeleteI don't think the spider was very happy either to be honest, he looked distinctly disgruntled!
DeleteI like spiders, but I can understand a person being a little startled if one ran out of their shoe and across their foot.
ReplyDeleteThe shoes get checked every day now, Patsy :-)
DeleteSpiders..Uggh! Ok when you can see them. It's when you can't see them but know they are there they get scary.
ReplyDeleteThat is very true - it's the ones I can't see that keep me awake at night!
DeleteOh my goodness - the one sitting on my bedcovers last month looked as though it could move a chair or two...love that image (well, sort of love it ha ha!) :-)
ReplyDeleteSome of them look really big and tough don't they!
