A Proper Bed At Last!

Tonight for the first time since the middle of November when Dusty had his TPLO surgery, I will be sleeping in a proper bed! Yay!

Last Tuesday, Dusty’s X rays at our vet’s showed his bones had healed and the metalwork was fine. Now we are waiting to hear from the orthopaedic surgeon about what happens next with regard to his exercise and the timing of an operation for the luxating patella.

I was walking round on air all day.

Last week we got rid of our old very high bed base, so I moved back upstairs with Dusty knowing he’d be fine getting on and off the mattress on the floor which was slightly more comfortable than the chair bed. Today the new bed arrived – it’s an extra low one designed for attic rooms. It feels so comfortable, but when he has his next op, I’ll probably end up sleeping downstairs on the chair bed again for a while.

We have pushed the bed up against the wall to minimise the risk of him falling off. It’ll be handy when smaller grandchildren come to stay for sleepovers too as I won’t have to put bed rails on the sides to stop them plummeting to the floor (it only happened once and fortunately the very small grandchild was unharmed, but I don't think my nerves ever recovered). And it'll be handy if we ever move to a house with sloping ceilings.

Harley is glad he’s getting back to normal. She can’t wait for the day when he’ll be allowed to run round the garden chasing other cats away. Today it was me running round the garden in my socks after another cat had cornered her behind the bins. She’s such a gentle, inoffensive little thing and at least two of the other cats round here pick on her.

Happy Almost Spring!

    1. I was very excited to just get back in my bedroom, I'm almost beside myself at the thought of sleeping in a proper bed again. What is still to come is quite daunting, but I keep telling myself we've got this far and one day it'll just be a memory :-) xx

  6. Wonderful news about Dusty, and your getting back to sleeping in a real bed again rather than a chair bed.

And it's almost spring so just right for Dusty when he's able to get out again, and defend Harley. :-)

  7. This is really lovely news, Teresa. It must be a massive relief for you that Dusty is doing so well and a great bonus to be back in bed too. By the way, I really love your owl duvet cover! Wishing you and Dusty lots of blissful nights of slumber.
Poor Harley. We think our Muffin is being picked on too as he won't go out until after dark and only then for a quick dash. I think his territory has been captured and he doesn't know where to go now. And he keeps sitting on the table so that when we go up to him, he can put his arms up onto us for a reassuring cuddle. Bless him! I will keep an eye out for the tormentor, but although I hear this other cat, I can never catch him. Good for you for going out in your socks - I'll probably have to do the same once I spot the invader! Hopefully, Dusty will soon be out there protecting Harley again. xxx

    1. Poor Muffin. It's awful when they get picked on isn't it. I love that he has reassuring cuddles. It often happens that way when a new cat moves into the area doesn't it. I hope you can see off the other cat xx

  9. many years ago I slept on a futon. When I eventually bought a proper height bed it felt really high and I was scared I'd fall out! Super pleased that Dusty is making a recovery. Give him a stroke from me X

  10. I'm delighted that the news is all good, but rather confused about the sleeping arrangements. Do I take it you've been sleeping in a dog basket? Teresa, I think you must be some kind of Saint.

    1. I've been sleeping on a fold out chair bed downstairs, Frances as I couldn't risk him jumping on and off the bed which was very high - although I think his basket might have been more comfortable. Also meant if he needed to go outside in the middle of the night (he only did twice when his body clock was out of kilter after the operation), I wouldn't have to carry him up and down the stairs. I was quite cosy in my little nook at the end of the living room :-) xx

  11. Good to hear Dusty is on the road to recovery at long last Teresa. You are very good altering your sleeping arrangements like that - the things we do for our pets eh? I told one of my grandsons that we were going to put bunk beds in the children's room at our house. he has already worked out a rota for who gets the top bunk - he is an only child but treats his slightly elder cousin as a brother and they have regular sleepovers with one another. No dogs allowed in that room though! :-)

  14. Hi Teresa,

Yeah, I know, where is that Gary? Here I am! :)

Really pleased to read that Dusty is improving. Always good to sleep in a proper bed. I remember when I finally purchased a proper bed, Penny decided that my bed was actually her bed! That duvet cover is a hoot!

    Take care, Teresa.

    Gary :) x

    1. I was so so worried about his bones not healing as quick as they should, Debs - I was over the moon when they confirmed all was well. His next op should be on the 29th March, then hopefully a few weeks after that and he'll be able to get back to normal :-) xx

    1. We haven't had any over for sleepovers yet, Suzy. Dusty's back to the orthopaedic vet on Tuesday and our vet reckons they'll keep him in to have that trick knee operated on. He's blissfully unaware bless him xx
