The Perils of Forgetting Your Camera

Phone cameras are great. But there are times when you need the Real Thing.

We went to the 70th Anniversary of VE Day Open Day at the Harwich Redoubt Fort. It’s always a great place to visit with the kids. Then we had a stroll round Old Harwich and ended up sitting on the Ha’penny Pier with drinks from the cafĂ©.

We then went down onto the pontoon and watched a very nice man and his lovely little boy (and beautiful dog) crabbing. He let the children hold the crabs and pull in the lines, then we all watched as they released the crabs to race back into the sea.

We thought we’d missed the flypast by the P-51 Mustang, but as we were heading for home, it zoomed overhead. We watched all the wonderful manoeuvres, hearts in mouths as the pilot flew low over the trees before soaring upwards.

I took some photos with my phone.

Brilliant isn’t it? It was there - you'll have to take my word for it. Just out of shot.

Here it is again.

And another.

Yes, I know - it's a seagull.

You wouldn’t believe how many photos of the sky I had to delete. But I did manage to get a couple – more by accident than design.

I particularly like the one above of the plane flying over the Dubs.

Seagull and plane! They're both there, honestly.

I feel very lucky that I did not have to live through the times my parents did. Very lucky.

  1. TeeHee! We had a wonderful flypast on carnival day in August and took some photos of - er - dots in the sky, yes with a phone camera. Only way you can see them is to enlarge them on the phone screen!! Yes our parents had it tough didn't they. We are very lucky - except getting used to all this technology! Still I might whinge but what would I do without it, even if does drive me wild at times :-) xx

    1. I was just thinking, Sue - before we went digital, you could snap away and you wouldn't know whether you'd captured anything until the film was developed. I can remember puzzling over many a photo wondering what on earth I'd been trying to get a picture of :-) xx

  2. Teresa, I find that my phone camera always clicks just after I've pressed it, so anticipation is required. Not easy with anything that moves!

    1. Just to be awkward, mine wasn't clicking, Frances so I didn't know whether I'd taken any photos or not until it was too late xx

  3. Photogenic stuff always happens when we're without our cameras - it's a bit like getting story ideas when there's no possibilty of writing them down.

Glad you got to see it all and had an interesting day though. And I agree with you, we have things much easier now than during the war. Not the greatest worry by a long way of course, but I wouldn't have enjoyed chocolate rationing.

  4. Lovely pictures of cloud formations Teresa. Sounds like you had a wonderful day. I took loads of photos with my camera phone on holiday but the sun was so bright I couldn't see what I was taking. Luckily most of them came out fine.

  5. Sounds like a wonderful day, Teresa, and considering you used your camera phone, you did well as you can clearly see the plane and the cloud formations.

It always seems to be the day we forget the camera we see the best things. :-)

    1. I'm not sure to be honest I could have done any better with my camera as I wouldn't have been able to see the screen on that either, but I would have been able to zoom in better on those clouds ;-) xx

  6. I'm not sure my photos would have been any better with a real camera. Anyway, it's hard taking photos of planes with your hands over your ears!

    1. It was pretty noisy, Wendy I must admit, especially when he was zooming down over the trees, but a nice noise. I hardly went to run for cover at all xx

  8. They're still lovely pictures. It's great to see the old planes still flying and you're right they do make a nice noise. :-)

  9. Hi Teresa,

I suppose, from a philosophical angle, there would of been a time if we left our camera behind, we'd have no photos at all. Nice attempt with your camera phone during such a meaningful event.

We do indeed have much to be grateful for and we must uphold the freedoms that they fought for. There is a political hint in my statement.

    Have a lovely weekend, Teresa.

    Gary :) x

    1. That is very true, Gary. Better than no photos at all.

We have to keep fighting xx

  10. Ha ha, Teresa, we saw the Mustang at a local air show, and the sound is heart-stopping. It gave you a lump in your throat and heart to think of the young pilots who fought for our freedom. I was the same as well, snapping away and got the trail endings. Lovely sky pictures though, and that bottom one looks like an underwater picture. Keep safe. xx

    1. Yes, you certainly do get the lump in the throat and heart thinking of the times when the planes were used in battle and the bravery of those young pilots xx
