Latest on Dusty!

Well it seems the mystery of Dusty’s recurring abscess is still a mystery. We had to take him back to Dick White Referrals at Six Mile Bottom on Tuesday and he was admitted for tests. Leaving him was horrible – it’s never easy is it and I didn’t get upset in front of him, but I was blubbing so much coming home my poor husband ended up taking a wrong turning!

Dusty had a scan on Tuesday which didn’t show anything up, so they operated on Wednesday.

The vet cleaned out the infection and took a scrape of bone for cultures. They kept him in on Thursday to keep an eye on him and we went to pick him up today. He was so pleased to see us and when he got in the car, he barked as if he was shouting for joy.

All being well, we’ll see our vet for a check up next week and hopefully by then they’ll have the test results and will know which antibiotic is best to target the infection. Then back to Six Mile Bottom at the end of the month for another check up.

In the meantime he’s on soft food, no toys, no chews, no running about like a mad thing off the lead… I’ve put all his toys away – and my shoes which he likes to gather up. He’s not even allowed to go out in the garden off the lead – not because he’ll run around, but because he’s likely to find a stick or a rock or something else to chew on!

I finally got the norovirus which has been roaring its way through the family and was in bed all of Wednesday, which was kind of a blessing as I slept away a lot of the worry. I keep looking at those that haven’t succumbed yet and wondering who will be next. Cheerful aren’t I?

  1. Hopefully Dusty's abscesses will be sorted soon and he'll get rid of the bothersome thing.

Norovirus is horrid, hope you start to feel better soon, Teresa. At least everyone will now be okay for Christmas.

    1. Thank you, Carol - took him for a walk this morning and he nearly pulled my arm out of its socket! I don't think he's going to like this being kept on the lead business at all!
Yes, I'm hoping the bugs will be gone by Christmas :-) x

  2. If only we could explain to animals what was happening. Sadly we can't but bet it was great to see him again. Hopefully they can diagnose the problem. Sorry you've been poorly too. No wonder some animals hibernate until the Spring. What a good idea.

  3. Oh, Teresa. What a time you're having. And Norovirus on top of everything else.
From all you've told us about Dusty, he's a tough little character, and
I'm sure he will get through this nasty infection thing. He'll be racing across that beach again in no time. So you just concentrate on getting over that horrible bug so you can keep up with him. Sending hugs to everyone. xx

  4. Oh my goodness, Teresa - what a horrible time you and Dusty have had. My 83 year old mum had the dreaded NV and now my daughter has it. It's such a horrible virus but the only saving grace is it seems to only last a short while. Hope you are both better soon x

    1. Your poor mum and daughter, Wendy - I hope they're better soon. I knew when my 3 year old grandson threw up all over both of us that we might be in for a bug fest, then it made its way through the kids here (it had already hit my son's family who live away). My daughter got it and was so ill - I was really worried about her, then I was next. I'm still feeling weak and shaky, but on the plus side I've lost a lot of weight - handy before Christmas - always look on the bright side.
I really hope you can dodge the bug xx

  5. Oh Teresa you poor thing. You must've been knocked for six. Hopefully that'll be the last of it and everyone will have a healthy bug-free Christmas. Poor Dusty too. I hope the vet sorts his infection out for good this time.xx

  6. Poor old Dusty! No toys! It will all be worth it, if this persistent infection is sorted out.

Three of us from work had a sickness bug last weekend, and I can totally sympathise with that too.

Hope you will all bounce back to health in time for Christmas. x

It's really widespread isn't it, this horrible bug. Hope you're fully recovered now :-) x

  7. My heart goes out to you. Get well soon and drink plenty of fluids - most important!! My mum ended up in hospital with the awful virus due to dehydration - not pleasant at all. She is all better now and can't wait to visit her next week. All the best, Teresa.

  14. Dear human, Teresa,

I sure hope that Dusty's situation clears up. I had a number of lumps that the very nice vet removed. I'm much better now. Hope that Dusty continues to do well in the healing process.

Ah yes, the flu has flown into my human's house. Think I shall stay with my human brother, Tristan, over the weekend.

    All the beast, um, best.

    Pawsitive wishes,

    Penny :) x
